B&L Extra Rapit Portrait Petzval 290mm F3.3
History: This specimen is Bausch & Lombs
answer to the Dallmeyer 3B potrait lens. WIth similar stats and even
the Dallmeyer layout in the rear, it also offers a fantastic sharpness
and the soft focus adjustment in the rear. Bausch & Lomb offered
this lens to severall companies for rebrand. This specimen was sold by the Sweet Wallach & Co company, which offered many photographic items from all the great brands in Chicago. The even features the IIII-I marks in the rear like the Dallmeyer lenses (not sure if this wasnt retrofitted afterwards) and the rearmost element can be used to achive similar diffusion effects as the B series.
This beauty comes in a good condition. The brass shows quite some wear, but also an authentic patina, which shows the decades of use. It might not be the lens for display but its a beast when it comes to using it for wetplate. The greatest benefit here is the iris aperture,
which is still working properly, something you wont find on many
petzval lenses. The glass is in nice condition too, there are quite some marks here and there, including a small scratch on the front and some fine cratches in the rear. Still overall, there is nothing that does have an impact on the image, and it
looks fantastic on the groundglass: a sharp center with a smooth falloff
towards the outer parts. If you want to come close to the Dallmeyer 3B feeling on a budget, this is your thing!
its fast open aperture of F3.3 and a focal
lengh of 290mm (or 11.5"), this lens will work from fullplate up to 8x10 formats, showing some fine character on portrait range.
It comes with a flange and is ready to shoot!
