History: The Dallmeyer Fast Portrait series A series is well known for their incredible image quality.  For decades those lenses were the top of the top for reknowed portrait studios.  I was going to write that this is fantastic clone of that lens, but actually its more then a mere clone. It offers Dallmeyers optical quality, but in my opinion the handling is even better then most Dallmeyers of that time. The pros of this lens are clear to see: you have your soft focus control on the outside of the barrell (unlike the standard 3A, where you needed to remove the lens from the lensboard, then rotate the rear element, and put the lens back in). This way you can adjust the soft focus more convinient without taking the lens out, maybe even while looking at the groundglass. Another thing is that it also features a working iris aperture, and gives you the absolute control over the exposure, without needed waterhouse stops. Only the 3A models featured those characteristics, and they are highly sought after for that.

Condition: This beauty comes in a really good condition. The brass shows only light wear, and a nice golden patina. The rack & pinion mechanism is complete and working smoothly. The soft focus also works fine, changing the distance between the two rear elements.  The lens features an iris aperture, which works, though a bit tight. Its missing two of its blades, but there are more then enaugh blades to cover that. The glass is in a really good condition, the front is really really clear, also is the rear, with only some cleaning marks showing. Allover the glass is clear and doesnt show any haze, seperation or fungus.

It comes with the original flange.

This behemoth is not a lens for the field work. Its big and its heavy. It will need a good and sturdy studiocamera with a nice big lensboard to be mounted on. But then it will provide the user with incedible sharp images with a nice and characteristic swirl in the back (depending on format).

With its 400mm (or 16") focal lenght it will work nicely from 8x10 formats up to 11x14 formats, even 12x15 on portrait range with some light falloff.
