Darlot (A. Thompson) Petzval 300mm F4
The lens is engraved with: 'A. J. Thompson & Co - Importers -
Boston'. Thompson was an US importer for optical and other technical
equipment. He had a contract with Darlot, from whom he imported the
lenses. This quite early lens is probably around 1860ies, since it
lacks a waterhouse slot and also the screws on the rack & pinion
mechanism are really large (which was a sign for early lenses).
The focal lenght is about 300mm (or 10") and the open aperture is around F4. It will work best for 8x10 format with a destinctive petzval character in the outer region.
Condition: This brass beauty comes in a great condition. The brass looks nice and shows a fantastic patina. The rack & pinion mechanism is complete and still works perfectly. The glass is in good condition, there are only very few cleaning marks, which is rather unusuall for such an old lens. There is no haze, fungus or anything that would affect the image quality.
It comes with a flange and even the original leather lenscap!
