Emil Busch Portrait Petzval 300mm F4

History: A very intruiging lens, that will probably not meant for a collectos but rather as a working horse for a shooters gallery.

Interesingly the lens is engraved with:

'EMIL BUCSH - Rathenow

Emil Busch was one of the early optical makers in Germany. He was well known and respected for his well built Aplanat Portrait lenses, and later also for the extra Rapid Portrait series which had a petzval layout. BUT as you might have noticed, the Busch part is engraved wrong here: 'BUCSH'. Now i cant say if that is an authentic Emil Busch lens, which was engraved in the wrong manner (and then probably sorted out in the quality control), or if this is one of the many not engraved petzval lenses, (especially the french makers often didnt engrave back then), which was later on engraved by someone with the wrong spelled name. I would suspect the later version, but i think it will remain a mystery.

Condition: The lens is overall in an ok condition. The rack & pinion is complete but works rather jumpy, if pushed. A thin connecting part of the outer barrell seems to have been repaired at some point (and broken again), still the lens holds completly safe, so this is rather an aesthetical point.

The glass is in a really good condition, with minimal cleaning marks andhairfine scratch in one of the rear elements, which wont affect the image to the slightest(!), otherwise it is quite clear.

As i wrote, i dont expect this to end up in a collectors shelf, but rather as a working horse for a shooters studio. The center is quite sharp and well defined, with quite some petzval character on the right format.

This focal lenght is 300mm (12") with an open aperture of F4. It will cover 8x10 format with a nice petzval character especially at portrait distance.

Lens comes with a fitting flange.
