Roussel & Berteau Portrait Petzval 400mm F6
History: A very interesting Portrait Petzval lens made by the french makers H. Roussel & L. Berteau and a fine example of the early french opticiens.
What is most fascinating here, that the specs of this special Petzval lens completly match the famous Dallmeyer 4D portrait Petzval. That is rather uncommon at best.
The lens features a focal lenght of 430mm (or 17") and a F6 starting aperture.
Im not sure yet, whats the story here is, did Dallmeyer copy this french lens, or did the french copy Dallmeyers succesfull formula? I would tend more to the second version. Comparing the lens to the Dallmeyer 4D, i couldnt say the difference between those on the groundglass!
The condition of this specimen is outstanding and collectors worthy. The brass shows only
light wear and an authentic patina. Even more important the glass is super
clear here, i cant even hardly see any cleaning amrks here, there is
no haze, fungus or any damage.
The lens features a waterhouse slot and even 3 of the original (and quite fancy) waterhouse stops. Something that is almost always missing.
With its 430mm focal lenght it will well cover 8x10 ar even 11x14 wide open, and up to 12x16 slightly stopped down.
Lens comes with the original flange.
