Voigtländer Portrait Petzval 170mm F3.2

€850.00 Sold Out

History:  I dont think that Voigtländer & Sohn needs any introduction. It was one of the best (if not the best) lens maker in the early days, who revolutionized photography by introducing the petzval portrait lens.

This quite late version was made in the very early 1900ies, very likely in the year 1901. The engraving reads:

'Portrait Objektiv I - No 3 - No 67.855 - Voigtländer & Sohn, - Braunschweig'

It puts the lens into the Portrait Series I, which was famous for the wide open aperture of F3.2.

Condition: The lens comes in quite a collectors condition. It was never polished and features the authentic golden laquere and also some patina. The rack & pinion seems complete, but not really moving. The glass is really good here, featuring only some feint cleaning marks here and there, but no obvious damage. An interesting detail: the lens features the Dallmeyer layout in the rear. Since the elements are cased its not incident, or just a previous user assembling the lens the wrong way. I know that Voigländer did experiment with the flipped rear elements, like Dallmeyer used them, but i rarely had any lens that featured that.

This lens has about 170mm focal lenght (7") and an open aperture of F3.2. It was probably designed for 4x5 portraiture work, and will be best used on that format, although it might produce some interesting images with 5x7 on portrait distance.

Lens comes with a fitting flange and lenscap.
